What makes Christmas Special
Saturday, 22 December 2018
What's up guys, seasons greetings, I'm super excited not just because of Chrismas but because it's also my favorite time of the year (high fives for everyone). What about y'all? I am sure most of you are looking forward to this time as well. It's the season for giving and getting, being merry, so many beautiful lights, and most importantly spending time with loved ones. For me, Christmas brings with it so much memory and ambiance; a different kind of feeling, unique and true.
The one moment where I can range from an adult to a child over and over again. I love the decorations, the cold weather, the smell of coffee and gingerbread latte (please let me know if there is such a thing, seriously please).Every single year it's very special. It means something different to everyone, some memories good, some bad, some innocent, some wild, a lot of us can usually recollect something memorable during this period. With that being said, I want to share with you all briefly what Christmas means to me.
I remember growing up in my birth country, Nigeria, West Africa. Christmas was so different from common western practices. It wasn't about exchanging gifts, or Santa Claus (Seriously, a mythical old dude bringing gifts down a chimney?) Our parents didn't even have the time to make that stuff up. It usually went like this; wake up Christmas morning, say a prayer together wearing the new Christmas day clothes you get from your parents, lots of Christmas music you barely know the lyrics to but you still make it up flawlessly anyway like the boss that you are. Eating rice, stew, and chicken (I swear its always rice, stew, and chicken) and lots of banga (fireworks). Year after year it was something mostly along those lines, and year after year it was still always special. We didn't really exchange gifts and looking back I don't remember a particular gift that stood out. However, one slightly significant thing I do remember was sometimes receiving money from my parents' friends (I guess you can call them Christmas gifts) it was more like pocket money.
Anyway, my mum would take it and always say she was saving the money for me but strangely enough I would never see it again. Maybe it was because I was too young to know what to do with it or she was just hustling me (lol). Even when my parents weren't feeling as festive, my siblings and I would take the responsibility of Christmas in our hands. I mean it only comes once a year. We usually take it up a notch by making our own decorations from paper. We would argue and fight about what to make and how to make them, then we would argue and fight some more about where to put up our decorations in the house. Gosh, those were really awesome times!
Either way, looking back now my Christmases weren't that elaborate but it was very special to me because it brought us all together. It was so much more than just decorations, food and clothes.
What childhood memory do you have of Christmas? and if you are reading this post after Christmas what was memorable about Christmas this year?

ReplyDeletethank you Daniela! i love what you mentioned about reflecting on the year while looking forward to the New Year. I do agree with that.

But this year I realized that it's a time to spend a minute to look back and reflect about the things that happened this year. It's a time to list the top achievements and everything that we are thankful for. This is to prepare ourselves for 2019. Thank you so much for sharing your very inspiring christmas message dear. ReplyDeleteHey Amara!!!! i miss too o.
DeleteThis is a wonderful take on Christmas. I love thinking back to
ReplyDeleteMy childhood traditions and have started sharing them with my children.
that's awesome Katie!
DeleteMy family was always together for Christmas but we were always waiting. Waiting for family, waiting for food, waiting for everything. I'm trying make it more fun for my son. It's hard because my husband who is also West African doesn't have any of same Christmas traditions.
ReplyDeletelol at the waiting game, now that what we all have in common. I am sure you and your husband can create your own unique traditions based on your experience.
DeleteThank you for sharing what Christmas was like for you growing up!! It's fascinating hearing how families differ in celebrating Christmas, even within the same culture!! I loved the magic of Santa as a child but resented my parents when I found out it was all a lie. So now I struggle with how to handle it with my own kids!! But we keep it simple, just 1 small present per kid, nothing crazy like many families in the US!
ReplyDeletelol that's so cute Heather. Regarding your kids, in my opinion its best to keep it real with them. That way they know the gifts they get during christmas is out of love from you.
DeleteLovely photos! I always enjoyed making cookies with my mom. And decorating the tree! I hope my kids enjoy it as well.
ReplyDeletethanks Airing! I am sure your kids would love baking and decorating the tree cause its very interactive and they get to be creative.
DeleteI couldn't agree more with you! Christmas is the most special time in the year! I love all the festive decorations and food which is truly delicious here in Poland. :)
ReplyDeletethanks Passion. I am sure you had a lovely christmas
DeleteThe best part about Christmas is definitely getting to spend time with friends and family. I also love all of the crafts that my son makes and I get to put up on the refrigerator or tree!
ReplyDeletetime with family is important and Its good to hear that your son gets crafty around christmas
DeleteI always wondered how other countries celebrated Christmas. Love that it's not based around presents and more about just spending time together. Now that I'm older I don't care for the gifts - I just love spending time with family!
ReplyDeletei agreew with you.
DeleteThis year was memorable for me and my husband as both of our daughters were married this year. We had a chance to celebrate the holidays with our expanded family over a three day period! Happy holidays to you and your family!
ReplyDeleteOMG!! that's awesome!!! congratulations! I am happy to hear that you celebrated the holidays with your new family.
DeleteYou have very good thoughts and you are also very good at capturing pictures. Marry Christmas and happy holidays.
ReplyDeletethank you so much Rupy. Reading your comment encouraged me.
DeleteThere are many nice traditions. For our little family, since we are always together throughout the year, it's being able to be together, wear costumes, be silly, open gifts, and just do things together. :D
ReplyDeleteI love it Maria, that excatly what i did this christmas with my family.
DeleteWe have a Christmas tradition at home to watch all Disney princesses movies until midnight! It was a good feeling coz the whole family is there.
ReplyDeleteawwww that's so cute Blair.
DeleteI, too, love Christmas! Our tradition, being Cuban, has always been to go to Christmas Eve mass, then have a large family dinner, followed dessert and coffee, and finally, opening gifts. We call it Noche Buena, or Good Night. The last few years, though, thanks to some strife and conflict in the family, we haven't really celebrated like that. We've had good times, but it just isn't the same. I hope one year soon we'll be back to our big family celebrations!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Cris! I love the Cuban tradition of celebrating christms from christmas eve. I also hope very soon your family will celebrate chrstmas again like you all used to. Maybe you can help bring back that tradition into your family this year, remind everyone what of Christmas used to be and is supposed to be about.
DeleteChristmas is my favorite holiday. When I was growing up in the Philippines, we would go over to my dad's aunt's house and it always felt like a big reunion. There was food, karaoke, games and just good times. This past Christmas it was so memorable to spend a second Christmas in our home and buy a fresh Christmas tree!
ReplyDeleteI love how christmas brings everyone together. I am glad you were able to create new memories in your home last year :)
DeleteLove your post! Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. Not only do I love to shop for unique gifts for people but I really do love entertaining during the holidays. It's such a great way to spend time with family and friends!
ReplyDeleteThanks Patty! I would love to also host get togethers during the holidays this year. I would love to give my family and friends a chance to dress up, be merry and have fun whle creating new memories.
